BlizzCon 2019 HyperX Chalk Art

I got the opportunity to work with HyperX at BlizzCon and it was the coolest thing I've ever done! I would do it again in a heartbeat. There's a lot I wish I could change or "fix" about this, but I'm proud of it.

Here's was another idea we didn't go with.

I helped the booth builders with an idea of what I thought this giant chalk board would need for a stand. They made one better than I could have come up with. It was really amazing to see it come to life.

I got two of these 4x6 foot plywood boards, one to do a practice run at home.

It took several days to sand, prime, and paint these by myself with my limited tools.

Tied down my sketch and added a grid to transfer to the chalk boards.

I drew the grid on both boards and scaled up the drawing by hand twice. Happy to say my second pass was more accurate. It was totally worth the extra work to do two!

I knew I was going to be tight on time trying to finish this huge mural with my little chalk pens within two days so part of my reasoning for doing a test board was to get down which colors I was going to use and mix before hand and how long each step t.

Versachalk, Cedar Chalk, Arteza chalk, and Posca paint pens. Out of 3 chalk pens, I'd say Versachalk has the best consistency.

This was my practice D.Va, which I like so much more than my final D.Va, which I'm disappointed with. To be fair to I had more time to experiment and make corrections on my practice one. I had to resist making changes at the show and risk wasting time.

Practice Tracer. Experimenting with quickly laying down shadow shapes and colors that will mix well together or better in a certain order so I don't have to figure it out at the show.

I did the lettering before the show to save time. One thing I wish I differently is to also finish some of the other details like the keyboards or some of the characters beforehand to totally focus on D.Va and Tracer and polish at the show.
